There we were, glasses raised, smiles wide, welcoming 2020 with the blind optimism only a fresh decade can inspire. I can still hear the clink of champagne flutes—my dear friend Matthias, his wife Mariya, their little Amelie laughing, all of us toasting to what we foolishly believed would be a year of possibilities. How innocent we were, blissfully unaware of the storm about to sweep across the globe.Now, looking back, it feels almost comical, like we were the cast of some cosmic joke.
